How did you get into your current job position?
I graduated from the University of Alberta in 2001 with a Business degree majoring in Finance. From there, I began working for Ford Credit in the Auditing and Collections department. After a few years, I decided to pursue other interests and opened a photography business with my wife. It was through photography that I met the person who would introduce me to the Broker world; I was doing a shoot for a high school friend of mine and her boyfriend was a Mortgage Broker. We started chatting, and eventually I ended up working with him as a Broker for a few years. In 2006, I decided to branch out on my own and that’s when I started Innovative Mortgage Solutions.
What is your favourite part of your job?
There are many things I enjoy about my job. I love meeting with clients on a one-to-one basis and really educating them on what the whole mortgage process entails. Because every client comes in with their own history and financial situation, the experience is a little bit different every time and I love figuring out ways to overcome any unique challenges that stem from this. As a business owner, I also get to enjoy the creative aspects of running a business – for example, we are currently in the middle of upgrading our website and playing a role in the final result is a great way to ensure that we are communicating the right message to potential clients.
What are your favourite activities to do in your spare time?
Photography and spending time with my young family. Having family and friends over is something we do often and I enjoy hosting these get-togethers. I also like to stay active – I’m currently the Captain of an Ultimate Frisbee team in Edmonton and I enjoy playing hockey as well. I’m an Oilers fan and enjoy going to their games. I also take part in the community as a member and past President of the Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce.
What do you see for your future at Innovative Mortgage Solutions?
In the beginning, Innovative Mortgage Solutions was just myself, my business partner Kris and our assistant Miranda. We’ve now grown to have an Administrative Assistant, a Brokerage Assistant and four Brokers (and we’re currently looking to hire on a fifth)! We’ve established some solid roots here in Strathcona County and look forward to expanding our business. Right now, we have several office locations throughout the Edmonton/Sherwood Park area and we also serve communities in Rural Alberta as well. Giving back to the community has always been part of our mission here at IMS and we love establishing long-term relationships with clients to make sure their mortgage goals are being met on an ongoing basis.
